British North Borneo: 50 Cents from 1938
by Proteus on May.08, 2011, under Recent Acquisitions
In my quest to add every country that ever issued paper money to my collection I have purchased a completely work out old banknote from British North Borneo (Malaya area of Asia). This particular note is from 1938, though British North Borneo has issued a few issues of this denomination. Unfortunately I had to cough up $51 for this banknote, but that is how it is with British North Borneo. Supply is low, demand is high. This one might even turn out to be a decent investment in the end, considering scarcity of such notes. Ugly, but valuable ;)

Recently, I managed to buy one in Fine condition for less than USD100. I consider it a good bargain. The 50 cent varieties are more scarce than the 1 dollar varieties. Good condition North Borneo notes are hard to find and collectors are prepared to pay a premium for them.

I’m glad I bought this banknote, but sometimes I feel a little guilty for spending good money on a ratty banknote that isn’t attractive, even in uncirculated condition. However, I did get to add British North Borneo to my list of countries. I like people’s reactions when I tell them that I have paper money from 223 countries. Then they start asking how many countries there are … most people don’t even think of former states.
